The Mighty STI, since 1999 when the first Australian delivered 2 door arrived
here, we have been modifying and tuning STI’s with all sorts of power upgrade
parts and engine management systems. In the early days this gave us the
opportunity to test, gather data and form judgments on what was the best value
for money and offered the most sustainable reliability. In 2002 when we first
had the opportunity to test the EcuTek engine management systems, our prayers
were finally answered on the tuning front, at last something that offered
incredible performance, drivability and engine safety using the Subaru factory
“Knock Control System”.
These early STI’s 2 and 4 doors alike are still one of the Most Popular models. A real “Drivers” car even in standard trim. The main features over the 99-00 WRX are: Forged pistons, Lower compression ratio, VF28 turbo, stronger gearbox, 4.44 final drive and slighty sportier trim detail. The 02 STI brought about the much anticipated 6 speed gearbox, Awesome!!! Not to mention the Brembo brakes all round, 17 x 7.5” wheels and even an adjustable shift light! Also the first Australian model to receive the AVCS (Active Valve Control System or also known as Variable Valve Timing). We were fortunate to have a customer give us his 02 STI (one of the first delivered in the country) and with some serious R&D from MRT & EcuTek we had it running a 12.9 second ¼ mile in no time at all! The main Mechanical variation through these 4 STI year models is the DCCD (Drivers Control Centre Diff) introduced in the 05 STI, a much welcomed feature. At last we receive what the U.S. market have had for 3 years, a 2.5L STI, Talk about Torque, these cars are very impressive even in standard trim, here we have an absolute weapon that proves Subaru can improve on an already unbeatable package. The All New Hatch, opinions vary as to whether Subaru made the right move offering a hatch only at the same time as this massive “face lift”, but sales of the ‘08 STI indicate that once again Subaru cant put a foot wrong! The STI features are very bold in this model and for the first time in Oz, we can order the “Type R”. The MY08 STI mechanically is essentially a combination of the MY07 STI and MY07-08 Liberty GT STI, with some extra driveline features and a bit more “Grunt”, what a combo! We have had the opportunity to tune many of these extreme machines already and the results have been very satisfying. Note the Dyno graphs reflecting the EcuTek & Dyno only option at $1950, then the MRT/S&J 3” Road Legal Turbo back to OEM Muffler option adding another $1700 and further 18kw at the wheels. With up to 40 extra kw at the wheels for under 4k, there are some very happy ’08 STI drivers on the Adelaide streets! The other point to note is that from factory Subaru have done a beautiful job of “sharpening” up the faster mode on the “SI Drive” function, but as you will see in the dyno graphs there is a very minimal kilowatt difference between the two modes at full throttle, we take advantage of this feature and offer two distinct power levels between Sport & Sport Sharp modes. As always fuel economy is a focus for us, and as a result we have seen as much as a 1L/100km improvement, even with the EcuTek & Dyno only option. Finally remember that any of the modifications come with the MRT “Factory Warranty Guarantee” and “National Warranty” which even covers your engine.
Remember tuning a car to your needs doesn’t necessarily stop at the engine and computer, brake and suspension upgrades can significantly improve your car too!
